Indigo Blue and white Telia with a geometric design thats typical of any Telia Rumal saree. Telia Rumals are basically from Chirala, Puttapaka and Ponchampalli. These double ikat squares were created in a small area of Andhra Pradesh using an unusual combination of Alizarin, iron or indigo and numerous vegetable oils in the process. The name Telia means oil and Rumal means handkerchief or square but now this craft is involved in making Sarees, Fabrics, Dupattas, stoles etc. The making begins with a design drawn on graph paper, followed by the preparation of yarn. Telia Rumal, the yarn is soaked in ginger oil and dung for 21 days and then wrapped according to the patterns designed on the graph paper. Then the most important part-the resist dye, in this, one by one, each yarn is resisted according to pattern and colour, thus unveiling a beautiful ikat fabric.
We may want to note that both warp and weft yarns are tie-dyed for a Telia Rumal weave, giving it a name double ikat. The original colours of Telia Rumal were shades of red, blue and black on a white unbleached cotton. Traditionally, alizarin is used for red and indigo to get black or blue colour. The weave is known for its distinct geometric designs and signature plain red border enclosing its designs. These are some of the things that makes it easy to identify Telia Rumal.
